June 11 Airlie Beach to Mission Beach
Airlie Beach was to have been our gateway to the Whitsunday Islands and our first chance to experience the GREAT BARRIER REEF. But waking up to rain (not so great for snorkeling) made us quickly change our plans for the day. We did an early morning drive around Airlie Beach and out to Shute Harbour.
And then we pointed the car north on the “Bruce Highway” with no definite plans. The day taught us just how important sugar cane is to the state of Queensland. In fact, we learned that Australia is second to only Brazil in the production of the worlds sugar.
After several stops along the way we ended up in MISSION BEACH, Queensland Australia. We were fortunate to find accommodations. Unbeknownst to us it was the Queens Birthday hence a national holiday and a “long” weekend. Our lodging was at the Mackays Motel. Which turned out to be a great little motel with wonderful proprietors.
Mission Beach and the surrounding beaches are lovely long beaches as pictured below. We had plenty of restaurants to choose from in Mission Beach and we consider ourselves extremely lucky to have selected to dine at “Bernies” restaurant. Bernies was exactly what we pictured an Australian “barbie” dinner to be. Our dinners were outstanding.
