June 12 Mission Beach to Cairns

Morning at Mission Beach began with overcast skies.  The photo above is at Mission Beach looking out towards DUNK Island.  We headed out driving north up Mission Beach and then through the hilly farmland towards the one and only “Bruce” highway.  We made two important stops along the way…the Sugar Cane Museum and K-mart.  Yes, Australia has K-mart and we were in need of an extra layer of warmer clothing.

By noon, we were in Cairns where the sun was shining and the temperature in the high 70’s.  The “Esplanade” in Cairns is great with something for everyone.  A community pool, a variety of exercise areas, kids playgrounds, skateboard park, bike trails and of course the mandatory “barbie” areas.

Our accommodations in Cairns at the MERCURE Hotel couldn’t have been better.  We were booked at the Mercure using our Travel Leaders negotiated rate (no mention of our being travel agents).  Upon check in we were given a beautiful room on the top 7th floor. Though we did not have a direct ocean view, we did have an adjoining “huge” verandah which was perfect for our own “happy hour”.

Our room included a refrig (with a fresh little carton of milk), microwave and a wonderful single cup “Nesspresso” machine along with a variety of coffees from which to choose.  What more could a girl want then a fresh cappuccino and internet access.

After along drive…walking the Cairns “esplanade” for hours with a stop for an adult refreshment made for a perfect afternoon.
