June 13 – Kuranda and surroundings

We were told by a local to take the crocodile warnings seriously. The “crocs” pictured below were part of the park at the Kuranda Koala Gardens.

There are several methods available to reach Kuranda…skyrail, scenic train and by car.  Since we had a rental car we opted for the rather winding but scenic drive up to Kuranda.  It was another beautiful day so the drive was pleasant.  Upon reaching the market area, we parked the car and strolled the markets.  Since Dave had yet to experience a kangaroo or koala we purchaced tickets for entry into the “Koala Gardens”.  I am still hoping that he will see kangaroos in the wild when we are on one of our day excursions out of Sydney.

Kuranda offers plenty of hiking trails.  We chose the one through the rain forest to “Barron Falls”.

Not being among the greatest shoppers, we departed Kuranda and continued to explore the area north of Cairns to Port Douglas.  The coastal scenery was excellent.
