Overlooking the town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen from the top of the Wank

Wank

Then it rained we visited the spa, the pool and the bar… multiple times. However, on the last morning before we were ready to leave we finally saw the sun and the clouds parted to show

the beautiful blue contrast the sky brings to the mountains.  We had spoken with the tourist bureau when we were contemplating doing some sort of extreme sport off of the Wank – another towering peak with gondola access, and found the path to get there. It was a 20 minute ride up and down filled with yodeling and gaping at the steep cliffs and walking trails that were the other ascending option. A trek, that had the weather been more ideal earlier during our stay, may have been our calves’ very painful future.

The view from the top was amazing, looking down at the quaint gingerbread-ish style looking village. The views encompass other high peaks, tips of dark green trees and fast moving wisp of clouds. An entire green field stretches on the backside of the mountain, but to the front, it is a steep face and most watch their step. There is a bar on the top that had been blessed by Pope Benedictine XVI who was a German archbishop prior. The walking trails stretch far in several directions with small cabins, shelters and benches along the way. There were many people scaling the mountain, walking the trails and enjoying the beautiful fall day. Had our half-day been any longer we would have spent the entire time up there. It was superb, the wonderfully breathtaking kind of superb that comes once in a blue moon. On the way down we were inspired by the ‘Sound of Music’ and sang the entire way. At the bottom, the literal high of being on the top of the Wonk had worn off and we were a little nervous to admit we were on our way. While Munich was still on the roster, it also meant our imminent departure was looming.
