When people hear “Dominican Republic,” their minds might immediately go to beautiful beaches, turquoise water, and all-inclusive resorts and while the Dominican Republic absolutely delivers on all of that, I came home from my recent trip with a much bigger appreciation for everything this destination has to offer.
As a travel advisor, one of my favorite parts of my job is getting out there and experiencing destinations firsthand. This trip was a little bit business, a little bit adventure, and a whole lot of fun!
My Dominican Republic adventure included five resort site inspections, stays at two new properties, an ATV adventure, a visit to a monkey sanctuary, swimming in a cenote, and plenty of delicious food and drinks along the way. Most importantly, I came home with firsthand knowledge that I can now use to help my clients choose the right Dominican Republic vacation for their travel style.
Five Resorts, Five Very Different Experiences
One of the biggest takeaways from my trip? Not all all-inclusive resorts are created equal.
And that’s exactly why I believe firsthand experience matters when you’re planning a vacation.
I had the opportunity to tour five resorts during my time in the Dominican Republic, each offering something a little different. Whether you’re looking for a luxurious and relaxing escape, a family vacation packed with activities, an adults-only getaway, or a resort that can accommodate a large group, there are options here for just about everyone.
Zemi Miches Punta Cana All-Inclusive Resort, Curio Collection by Hilton
I’ve stayed at a lot of resorts over the years, but WOW. Zemi Miches is impressive.
Fresh, modern, and inspired by the indigenous Taíno culture, this property was only about a year old when I visited. Even the name has meaning “Zemi” refers to a sacred spirit in Taíno culture, believed to bridge the physical and spiritual worlds and offer protection and healing.
That connection to the destination carries throughout the resort. Guest rooms feature natural stone finishes and petroglyph-inspired accent walls, creating a design that feels sophisticated while still reflecting the culture of the region.
And then there are the accommodations.
I toured one of the resort’s 16 beachfront bungalows, which feature direct beach access, a private plunge pool, dedicated butler service, and an outdoor shower. Talk about vacation goals!
Zemi also has an adults-only Club Azure experience, featuring a rooftop lounge and restaurant, infinity pool, and hot tub.
For travelers who want a little adventure mixed into their luxury, there are plenty of activities, including kayaking, paddleboarding, pickleball, and waterslides.
And one detail that really stood out to me? No seaweed on the beach, regardless of the time of year.
The resort also has some fantastic spaces for destination weddings and incentive groups, including the option for a private dinner right on the beach.
Oh, and because this is an all-inclusive resort, that smoked whiskey I enjoyed was included, too.
Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Punta Cana
If you’re looking for a resort where bigger really is better, Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Punta Cana definitely delivers.
With more than 1,800 rooms, this is a massive resort and thankfully, guests don’t have to walk everywhere. Trams run throughout the property, and I can even help arrange a golf cart rental for your stay.
There’s also plenty happening beyond the beach.
The resort is home to the largest casino in the Dominican Republic, measuring approximately 45,000 square feet, with blackjack, poker, roulette, baccarat, and slot machines.
Then there’s Rockaway Bay Waterpark, featuring 26 slides and food trucks for easy poolside bites.
For adults, there’s an Uncorked Experience wine tasting room, while shoppers can explore an impressive collection of on-site stores. There’s even a Nike store so technically, there really is no excuse to skip the gym!
But what surprised me most was just how much there is to do indoors.
Guests can enjoy laser tag, a flight simulator, a Formula 1 simulator, and even a vintage-style bowling alley. The resort also has some wonderfully unexpected conveniences, including dental aesthetics and teeth whitening, a Tumbler store, and a temporary tattoo studio.
This is a resort where you could easily spend an entire vacation without running out of things to do.
Moon Palace The Grand Punta Cana
Just opened in June, Moon Palace The Grand Punta Cana has already made a huge splash it is now the largest resort in the Dominican Republic.
And the resort definitely embraces the idea of going big.
Themed spaces are found throughout the property, and there’s live music in the lobby bar at night. During my visit, we even got a sneak peek at an upcoming Alice in Wonderland-inspired restaurant, expected to open by late December. The restaurant is being designed by the same creators behind the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Orlando, so I can’t wait to see the finished product!
The rooms are equally impressive, with spacious layouts, jetted tubs on the balconies, enormous TVs, included minibars and snack drawers, fleece-lined robes, and CHI hair products with a straightener/flat iron.
For entertainment, there’s a large bowling alley with its own bar, plus air hockey and, my personal favorite… foosball.
Families will especially want to take note of this property.
The kids’ indoor entertainment area for guests 17 and under was one of the most impressive I’ve seen. There are separate spaces designed for different age groups, including toddlers, a princess room, a huge arcade, and even a slide connecting the two levels.
And when it’s time to head outside, there’s a beautiful, wide stretch of beach with shuttles running back and forth, along with food and beverage service.
Don’t Just Stay at the Resort… Get Out There!
I love the convenience of an all-inclusive resort. Everything you need is right there, from meals and drinks to pools, entertainment, and activities.
But one of my biggest reminders from this trip is this:
Don’t let the convenience of your resort keep you from experiencing the destination.
The Dominican Republic has so much more to offer beyond the resort gates.
During my trip, I visited Evolution Adventure Park, where we got out on dune buggies and experienced a completely different side of the Dominican Republic.
We also learned about the country’s coffee and cacao industries and got to interact with farm animals. And yes, I got to bottle-feed a baby goat! 🐐
We even had the opportunity to swim in a cenote and visit a monkey sanctuary.
These are the kinds of experiences that turn a vacation into a story you’ll still be telling years later.

I’ll admit it: one of my favorite discoveries on this trip was just how much the Dominican Republic has stepped up its dining game.
At the deluxe and luxury all-inclusive properties I visited, dining was far beyond the typical all-inclusive buffet experience.
We’re talking lobster, lamb shank, filet mignon, top-shelf liquor brands, and craft cocktails.
And the food doesn’t stop when you leave the main restaurants.
Resorts are incorporating ice cream parlors, patisseries with specialty coffees, and poolside food trucks into their offerings, making it easy to grab something delicious whenever the craving strikes.
For travelers who equate an all-inclusive vacation with unlimited food and drinks but worry about sacrificing quality, I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised by what’s available in the Dominican Republic.
So, Is the Dominican Republic Right for You?
After experiencing these resorts and adventures firsthand, I can confidently say that the Dominican Republic belongs on the list for travelers looking for a warm-weather getaway with plenty of options.
But the right resort depends entirely on what you want from your vacation.
