Fiji and Vanuatu – Beaches? Yes, and So Much More!

To really get a true South Pacific vibe, visit more than one island.  These island nations can be surprisingly different – landscapes, traditions, language, government and adventure options can vary widely from place to place.

Highlights of Fiji:

  • Perfect for divers, the Great Astrolabe Reef is the fourth largest in the world, and is home to manta rays, reef sharks, turtles and massive marlin and tuna which make it popular with sport fishermen as well as divers.  Dive the Naiqoro Passage between its vibrant coral walls to see a variety of colorful fish like anthias, damselfish and angelfish.
  • Swim with manta rays in the Yasawa islands and go exploring in its ancient limestone caverns.
  • Visit the Upper Navua Gorge for a thrilling whitewater rafting experience through towering rock canyon walls surrounded by dense rainforest.
  • Experience a traditional kava ceremony to experience relaxation and fellowship with your hosts.

Highlights of Vanuatu

  • Hike Mt. Yasur at twilight to witness Mother Nature’s version of fireworks.  This fiery “Old Faithful,” erupts every 5 to 10 minutes with heart-pounding BOOMS!
  • Arrange for a guided dive to the WWII shipwreck of the SS President Coolidge, through open cargo holds to the ship’s interior.
  • Take a multi-day trek through the island’s massive rainforest, including a guided walk and homestay in a traditional community, crossing rushing rivers and encountering diverse wildlife along dense forest paths, eventually arriving at trail’s end at the edge of the ocean.
  • Vanuatu’s ancient test of manhood naghol (since evolved into the extreme sport of bungee jumping) involved young men diving headfirst from a tower with a vine tied to their ankle.  You can recreate this tradition at Summit Gardens where you can also zipline, fly through the air on a 70 meter canyon rope swing and cross a breathtaking suspension bridge.

When you’re ready for a day of relaxation, hire a private yacht or catamaran for a day trip to explore hidden lagoons, picnic on a private beach or do some whale watching, a good idea no matter which island you visit.
