Patagonia – brand of upscale outdoors-wear, right? Right, but also a region at the southern end of South America, shared by Argentina and Chile. Its varied landscape makes it an adventurer’s paradise (photographers and nature lovers will appreciate it too!)
- Hike the Paine Circuit and the W Trek in Torres del Paine National Park and join a wildlife safari to encounter pumas, condors, foxes and guanacos. View colossal ice fields and glaciers, and make the spine tingling journey across hanging suspension bridges over roaring glacial rivers.
- Ice climb the Perito Moreno Glacier and check out the iconic Cave of the Hands.
- Visit a traditional Patagonian ranch in the vast pampas steppe country, horseback riding with a ranch gaucho over rolling hills and returning to a traditional asado (casual barbecued lamb dinner – generally an excuse for a great party!)
- For heart-pounding whitewater rafting, attempt the Futaleufú River run with class III to V raging rapids. A little less challenging is Rio de las Vueltas, which offers a mix of calm waters and rapids with stunning views of Mt. Fitz Roy.
- Take a multi-day pack trip to “Le Fin del Mundo” – the End of the World and the stepping off point for Antarctic explorations. These trips venture into completely roadless territory, exploring its wild beaches and shipwrecks.
You might expect that accommodations in such a wild paradise might be a bit spartan, but you don’t need to sacrifice comfort to visit Patagonia. “Glamping” at Patagonia Camp’s yurts is far from rustic, with central heating, private bathrooms and patios, and roof skylights allowing you to marvel at the starry night skies. All-inclusive options include guided excursions, meals, and local wines. Five star lodges like Tierra Patagonia offer gourmet dining, spa services, and guided excursion options, all in a small eco-friendly environment with gorgeous views and unmatched hospitality.
