Missy Skoog’s visit to Hamburg, Germany

Hamburg, Germany city hall

On my recent trip to Hamburg, Germany, I discovered a city rich in history, culture, and maritime charm. As the second-largest city in Germany and the eighth largest in the European Union, Hamburg offers a unique mix of old-world architecture and modern vibrancy.

One of my first stops was Alster Lake, a serene oasis in the heart of the city. Whether you’re strolling along the water or taking a boat ride, the views are breathtaking and offer a peaceful escape from the urban bustle. Afterward, I enjoyed a hearty bowl of goulash soup, paired with a refreshing Alsterwasser—a local drink that’s like beer with a hint of lemon, a perfect match for the rich soup.

The warehouse district (Speicherstadt) was another highlight. With its red-brick warehouses and canals, this UNESCO World Heritage site tells the story of Hamburg’s maritime history. I also took a harbor cruise, getting an up-close view of the city’s massive port, the third-largest in the world, and learning more about Hamburg’s significance in global trade.

A quirky surprise was the sight of twisted chimneys around the Kohlbrand Bridge, a striking piece of modern architecture that adds a unique touch to the city’s skyline.

Hamburg is often overlooked by tourists, but it’s a city full of hidden gems and cultural wonders. Whether you’re admiring the calm of Alster Lake, exploring the historic warehouses, or cruising along the busy harbor, Hamburg offers a truly memorable experience.
