Rome is the capital city of Italy, as well as the capital of the Province of Rome and the Lazio region. With a population of approximately 2.7 million residents living within its 1,285.3 km² area, Rome is Italy’s largest and most populous commune and the fourth-most populous city in the European Union by population within city limits. The broader Rome metropolitan area is home to between 3.2 and 4.2 million people, while the urban area extends beyond the administrative city limits, reaching a population of around 3.8 million.

Situated in central-western Italy on the Tiber River, Rome is a historic and cultural hub, renowned for its ancient landmarks and role as the heart of the Roman Empire. Vatican City, an independent country, is entirely surrounded by Rome, making the city unique as the only example of a country within a city. This duality often leads to Rome being referred to as the capital of two states.
