If you’re a history buff and medieval architecture and artifacts interest you, you’ll want to visit Tuscany, which contains 7 UNESCO World Heritage sites. These sites range from the entire city of Florence, home to the famous Uffizi museum, to the landscape of the Val d’Orcia with its iconic Tuscan rolling hills and evidence of the beginnings of agricultural planning during the Renaissance.
Other sites include Siena, with its well-preserved Medieval “old city”, San Gimignano, Pienza (birthplace of Pope Pius II), Pisa, and the villas and gardens built by the familia Medici. Most of these sites make great day trips if you are staying in Florence – some are accessible by rail or bus.
