Creepy Hotspots to Travel … Church of Bones

Inspired by the season? Or maybe harbor more than a slight curiosity for the macabre? Bizarre destinations have lured many a tourist with odd, eerie & possibly plain weird intrigue. In honor of the season I’ve decided to share some of these grim locations that have sparked my curiosity.

First up … The Sedlec Ossuary aka Church of Bones in Kutna Hora, Czech Republic.

A little over an hour train trip from Prague nestled among Bohemian Hills one can visit one of the most unusual chapels you’ll ever see. Decorated with 40,000 – 70,000 human skeletons it is more commonly referred to as “The Bone Church.”

The bizarre interior designs with coats of arms and alters made entirely of bones. The best feature is a chandelier comprised of skulls and at least one bone from every part of the body includes a raven pecking at the severed head of a Turk. This is all made of human bones.

History is that in the 13th Century the Abbott of the Sedlec Monastery journeyed to Jerusalem and returned with a handful of soil which he scattered across the Sedlac Cemetery. People from all over wanted to be buried in the soil and the cemetery eventually ran out of room. To make space the bones were moved to make room for the newly dead. Now that’d be a morbid task.

There are “Skip the Line” Tours I can arrange so you don’t wander away.
