Festive Season in the Heart of Germany

The European Christmas Markets exceeded my expectations and there is no better way to see them then on a river cruise. I sailed on Tanquility II with Avalon Waterways. The Festive Season in the Heart of Germany was a 6-day cruise sailing from Nuremberg to Frankfurt.

In Nuremberg there is plenty of guided sightseeing to uncover the historical treasures and plenty of holiday lights and decorations along the way. My favorite eat was “little Nuremburg sausage sandwiches.” The Christmas market here is one of the most famous in Germany.  .

Next up on the itinerary is Bamberg, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There is a nativity scenes built by local citizens that is simply beautiful. Join a guided sightseeing tour of the medieval home of Germany’s Roman Empire dynasties.

You’ll hear about Christmas traditions as you cruise along the river  to Würzburg which is known as the “Pearl of the Romantic Road.” Würzburg is surrounded by hills covered with vineyards. As you stroll through the markets here sip on Glühwein (hot mulled wine) to keep you warm.   From here we were able to take an excursion to Rothenburg ob der Tauber with it’s half-timbered houses lining the cobblestone streets of Old Town.

The Main River Village has plenty of holiday delights and you can take a Guided Tour of a picturesque village. The Bavarian villages are simply breathtaking. Everything is even more beautiful when lit up with festive lights and decorations.

This European river cruise ends in Frankfurt, where you may want to stop for a sausage and take in one of many stunning views you will stumble upon. This is truly the perfect way to see multiple Christmas markets in less than a week.
